Play Place deliver curriculum focused activities that are appropriate for the children who attend the After School Club and all aspects of our learning curriculum, we:

  • Promote education for children, young people and families.
  • Offer social and educational opportunities for parents
  • Promote inclusion
  • Encourage free play and is underpinned by the ‘Play Work Principles’
  • Evaluate children’s learning and works to agreed planned outcomes

Our After School teams facilitate programmes that use both ‘Core’ and ‘Focused’ activities at each club session.

Core activities ensure that free flow indoor and outdoor play is encouraged, promoted and available throughout the session. Core activities are not prescriptive and children are encouraged to create their own ‘Play Space’, the range of core activities available usually includes activities offering a number of key themes:

  • ICT
  • Creativity and art
  • Sport and social
  • Knowledge and discussions

Focus activities provide an interactive educational programme that is designed to promote emotional well-being; they also provide unique interests and new learning opportunities. We take a co-design approach to planning focused activities and children are encouraged to work with the staff to agree the programme; this planning and delivery process helps children to gain knowledge and an understanding of themselves through participation. Parents are informed of programmes and encouraged to support their children, for example helping by providing the correct clothing and encouraging them to speak with their children about the activities.

Often focused programmes are linked to special events such as festivals or particular current affairs. For example activities to celebrate particular festivals or forthcoming events. Focused activities may include a variety of interests such as: cooking, music production and ICT or health education discussions. Our delivery themes support children to understand their personal values, beliefs and the importance of acceptance towards others.

Play Place have a range of resources within the family group, for example our Play Pods training and resources, Woodland Space, Music Studio, Mini Bus and a variety of inflatables. We have a number of staff members who have particular specialisms such as dance, photography, music technology and BMX skills. We encourage all of our settings to utilise the range of opportunities that are available. We like to encourage our clubs to support and participate in school events such as fetes and Christmas activities, for example we have provided inflatable castles, helped with prizes and provided a Father Christmas at events.

Introduced in early 2016, Play Place is a registered centre for the National Arts Award Scheme. We deliver this accredited outcome using informal and attractive group activities at a pace suitable to the children. Arts Awards outcomes are easy to deliver and may be achieved with minimal academic skills. These projects provide opportunities for children to explore a range of arts genre including: music, poetry, acting, dance, drawing, painting, photography and film making.

As part of our daily routine children are encouraged to have a drink and fresh fruit after classes and throughout the session, these are always available and children may take them as they wish. Our After School Clubs provide a healthy light snack for children as part of their daily routine; children may help in preparing their snack for the session. Play Place provide staff who have successfully completed their food handling and food hygiene course.
